Changing where we get energy from

As one of one of the UK’s leading renewable generation businesses, we've been involved in wind energy projects since 1992 and we're now one of the largest developers, owners and operators of on and off shore wind farms in the UK.

We are changing how we generate energy

Do you know?

  • We’re developing one of world’s largest off shore wind farms, in the Thames Estuary.

  • We’re building the UK’s largest dedicated biomass (crop burning) power station.

  • We’re building one of the largest tidal stream energy plants in the world, with our partners.

  • Worldwide, we’re reducing the carbon intensity of our generation by 50% by 2030 (on 1990 levels) and we’ll spend €3bn on green generation by the end of 2010.

  • We operate a range of hydropower schemes, including our large Rheidol scheme in Wales to smaller scale 'run-of-river' schemes too.

  • Improving the energy efficiency has reduced the carbon intensity of our offices dropping it by 15.5% per employee in 2006.

We are changing how we get energy to you

  • We’re investing billions in our electricity grids to help protect against power cuts.
  • We’re putting millions of pounds into Smart Metering technology installing meters that send readings back to us directly so no more waiting for the meter reader.

  • Since 2000 we’ve invested over £150m on energy saving improvements for UK households. To see how we can help you visit our online shop.

  • We’re investing billions of pounds in gas pipelines and storage keeping your gas flowing and protecting against future UK energy price fluctuations.

We are changing to make our service better

  • We’ve made our bills and letters easier to understand and jargon free.
  • We’ve moved our call centres back to the UK, with friendly energy experts at the end of the phone.

  • Our heating engineers call within an agreed 2 hour slot that suits you.

  • We’re committing £100 million over 3 years to help the elderly and the most vulnerable.

Schools education

  • We’re educating the next generation through our school’s education programme which will benefit 1 million UK children by the end of the year.

Green energy product

  • We’ve launched Go Green - Green electricity from 100% renewable sources and green gas whose CO2 is offset through sustainable projects
