Every home is different. The amount of energy you use and waste depends on the way your house was built and what you do. Take a look at our examples and see the type of things you can do to reduce your usage.
Mr Slane took part in our Energy Challenge to see how much money he could save on his energy bills. He lives on his own in Nottingham in a one bedroom flat. He already has cavity wall insulation, and as he doesn’t have a roof (there’s another flat upstairs you see) he doesn’t have to worry about loft insulation. He also already has double glazing as it is quite a new flat. Mr Slane didn’t have any low energy light bulbs though and he discovered by changing them in his flat he could save up to £9 a year for each bulb!

“Because my flat is quite new, I was happy to find that it’s actually quite energy efficient. But I realised I could still save money by using energy efficient lightbulbs, instead of the ones I have at the moment, so it made sense to replace the ones in my flat.”

Mr Slane also took a tour around the interactive house and made a note of some of the tips.

“I’ve got out of the habit of closing my curtains at night, and I tend to leave the lights on even when I’m not in the room. The interactive house was great to get other ideas to cut my energy bills…I just have to remember to use them now!”
